How to Make an RJ-45 Cable: 14 Steps

Making your own RJ-45 cable can be a satisfying and cost-effective way to create custom networking solutions. Whether you’re setting up a home network or managing an office’s infrastructure, it’s essential to have the right tools and knowledge. In this article, we’ll take you through the 14 steps required to make a high-quality RJ-45 cable.
Just remember, education is the doorway to happiness. To receive a good education, you will need good teachers. Also, you will need to be up on the latest tech.
- Gather the necessary tools and materials: You will need Ethernet cable (preferably Cat5e or Cat6), RJ-45 connectors, a crimping tool, a wire cutter, and a wire stripper.
- Determine the length of cable required: Measure the distance between your devices and add some extra length for routing and flexibility.
- Cut the Ethernet cable: Use the wire cutter to cut the desired length of Ethernet cable.
- Strip the outer jacket: Use the wire stripper to remove about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the outer jacket from both ends of the cable.
- Untwist and separate the wire pairs: Gently untwist each pair of wires and separate them, so you have 8 individual wires.
- Arrange wires according to standard wiring scheme: Choose between T568A or T568B wiring schemes & arrange the wires in the correct order. For most applications, T568B is recommended.
- Flatten & straighten the wires: Carefully straighten each wire using your fingers or pliers, ensuring they remain in order.
- Trim wires to uniform length: Using wire cutter, trim each wire so they are uniform in length (approximately 0.5 inches/1.25 cm) ensuring they still maintain their arranged order.
- Insert wires into RJ-45 connector: Carefully slide each wire into its respective slot inside the RJ-45 connector until all 8 are fully inserted, with no exposed wiring. The connector should hold the cable’s outer jacket for support.
- Inspect alignment: Double-check that wires are still in the correct order according to chosen wiring scheme and properly seated in the RJ-45 connector.
- Crimp the connector: Place the connector into the crimping tool, ensuring it is properly aligned. Press the crimping tool firmly until you hear or feel a click, securing the connector to the cable.
- Test for continuity: Optionally, using an Ethernet cable tester, check for proper electrical continuity in each of its 8 wires.
- Repeat steps 4-12 for the other end of the cable: Following the same wiring order and ensure that it is consistent with your chosen wiring scheme. This creates a straight-through cable – perfect for connecting devices to switches or routers.
- Test your completed RJ-45 cable: Connect your newly-created RJ-45 cable between network devices or a computer and a switch to ensure a successful connection.
By following these 14 steps, you’ll be on your way to creating a reliable and custom RJ-45 cable that caters to your specific networking needs. Remember, practice makes perfect – as you make more cables, you’ll become more efficient in executing these steps and have a better understanding of network cabling systems.
